Gordon E.E. Beanlands Memorial Scholarship


Background

This scholarship has been established in memory of Dr. Gordon E. E. Beanlands.

In 1973, Dr. Beanlands joined what was Dal’s then newly-established Institute for Resource and Environmental Studies (now known as School for Resource and Environmental Studies).Ìý In 1987, he was appointed Associate Professor and Director of the School.Ìý He retired from 17³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß in 1998.

Dr. Beanlands was an internationally renowned authority on environmental impact assessments (EIA).Ìý He was the visionary and driving force behind the pioneering framework for environmental assessment policy in Canada, which is now a standard reference work for students of EIA worldwide.

His particular area of expertise was capacity building in environmental assessment and related fields, and he was a sought-after facilitator.Ìý He served as senior advisor, consultant and educator for numerous governments, international development agencies and private sector corporations in over 40 countries across 6 continents.Ìý He served as chair, member or technical advisor on a number of environmental assessment review panels at the national and provincial levels in Canada.

Purpose

It was Gordon’s wish that this scholarship support students who demonstrate an academic interest in the field of environmental impact assessments.Ìý He was keen for recipients to be focused on pragmatic solutions to present-day resource management challenges and related areas including conservation, management, and/or traditional ecological knowledge.

Amount

The award will have a value of $500 with one tentative competition per year.Ìý

Application deadline

Students will be prompted to apply before the end of their first year of study through a notice from the department.Ìý Applications are due as posted each year and are to be submitted to Awards Committee at sres@dal.ca.Ìý

Eligibility

Applicant must be entering their 2nd year of the Master of Environmental Studies (MES) program at the School for Resource and Environmental Studies (SRES).

  • Applicant must demonstrate strong academic performance.
  • Applicant must be working in the following areas:
    • Environmental impact assessment and/or policy
    • Applied environmental protection
    • Applied solutions to resource management problems

Application process

Interested students must write a one-page single-spaced rationale explaining why they feel they should receive the award.
